The Lone Star ZNA Koi Club's 7th Open Koi Show will be one of the main features of the 12th Annual Houston Japan Festival this year. The theme of the Festival (to be held in and around Hermann Park's Japanese Gardens and Reflection Pool) this April 2nd and 3rd will be "JAPAN'S LIVING JEWELS". The beauty of the Reflection Pool and Japanese Gardens will add to the competition. We will also have vendors, a koi auction, a Friendship Dinner, and of course the fun of the Japan Festival. The show will be English style. Show events will take place at the Festival Grounds. The show tanks will be located along the Reflection Pool at the far end from the Japanese Gardens and far from the Taiko Drums, near to the parking lot. We will be under the live oak trees to protect us from the sun, as well as having tents for vendors and as needed. We are delighted to have our local koi breeders (Sam Pierson from OUT OF THE WOODS, Brett Rowley from BRETT'S KOI FARM, and Scott Purdin and/or Boyd Newman from PURDIN KOI FARM coming as vendors. Other vendors include M & M Artistic Designs, The Gold Factory, Pattigrafix, Pond Works, and several others. We in Houston try to be the friendliest possible, so call or email if there is any way we can help you get here. We plan to do everything we can do ensure that you have a fun time while at our koi show ... so join us! The REGISTRATION
FORM is
now available to print out. (Adobe

MAP
& DIRECTIONS TO HERMANN PARK The Japanese Gardens are located in Hermann Park which is between Downtown and the Medical Center off Fannin Street. Within the park the Gardens are at the southwestern end of the Reflection Pool; the Koi Show will be along the western side of the Reflection Pool, just south of the Sam Houston Monument. In fact Sam Houston is practically pointing in the direction of the show. You'll find parking along Hermann Circle Drive, at the Museum of Natural Science, and at the Houston Garden Center. The Live Oaks provide shade for the tanks and tents will be provided as needed. The show hotel is within a short walking distance and can be seen from the site. Koi and other vendors will be located adjacent to the show tanks. The Warwick
Hotel is just off the upper-left corner of the above map. We are honored to welcome six ZNA judges to this English-style show:
Please respect the judges and do not talk to or disagree with them during this activity. Print out the REGISTRATION FORM (click here) and mail it to Beth Grunden by March 28 or else bring it with you to the show. (You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to display and print the registration form. This is a free utility downloadable from www.adobe.com/reader. Please reserve your tank(s) as soon as possible so there are enough tanks available. Call or email Beth at egrunden@houston.rr.com. Early registration assures you of a tank ($50 1st tank with 2nd tank $25 or free if you own a tank used in the show). The tanks are 6' tanks. The maximum inches in fish that the tank should hold is 100". Less is best always. A photo of each fish entered is suggested. Registration forms will be available at the show, and will be available here on the website in the coming weeks, or we can send you one if you like. Note that novice competitors should declare their status when they reserve their tank (there are special awards for novices. See below). Registration on Friday begins at 9 am. Saturday morning registration is from 7:30 until 9:30 am. Show competitors should bring their own net and tub. One must be the legal owner of the koi he or she is showing. Fish should not be fed for at least five (5) days before being transported to the show. Fish deemed by the benching committee to show signs of disease, deformity, or significant injury will not be allowed in the show but put in the quarantine tank. Oxygen and bags will be available after the show as needed. Security will be provided Thursday (set-up day), Friday and Saturday night by the Houston Police Department, H20 Quality, & the Japan Festival. Only the
Show Team may be inside the tank circle or handle the koi during the registration
and benching. Joe White, judge from Florida has agreed to be responsibly for our water quality and is very experienced in this area. He will be continually monitoring the 40 show tanks and keeping the water quality up to par. Records will be kept. All fish measurements falling on a dividing line will fall in the lower size category. Example: A koi measuring exactly 18" will fall in the 15" to 18" category. Fish are divided into the following sizes:
If you would like to sponsor a trophy there are still a few available for sponsorship. Your name or company name will be engraved on the trophy ( Sponsored by ..). Still available are:
To sponsor an award, email Beth at egrunden@Houston.rr.com and send your check made out to LSKC to Diane Caulk at 410 Llano in Pasadena, TX 77504. SHOW HOTEL ACCOMODATIONS AT THE WARWICK The grand old Warwick Hotel: This is located at 5701 Main Street (click for map) in the heart of the Museum and Park District. The Lone Star Koi Club Group Rate is $129. This is high but not for this hotel. The cut off date for reservations was March 1st. Then it is on a "as available" basis. Unfortunately, this is a busy hotel and reservations are scarse so reserve now. The hotel is kitty corner from the show site and one can easily walk to the show site or the hotel will give rides if requested in advance. The bar has been checked and it stays open late, guys. The hotel does have hair dyers, etc and all the amenities in the rooms as it is a 4 star hotel. Show activities will take place here and the hotel is very convenient to everything else. RESERVE NOW BY EMAILING wendy.barker@dolce.com (713-639-4509). There may still be a few rooms available. Tell her you want the group rate for Lone Star Koi Club and also a confirmation number. Let her know what kind of a room you want. She'll want your credit card. Hobby Airport is closer to this hotel than Houston Intercontinental/Bush Airport, but either one will do. Both have limo or shuttle service available to the Warwick Hotel. Round trip is approximately $25 to $35 (Houston Intercontinental). When you make your hotel reservation, tell Wendy Barker that you will need a shuttle to the hotel and she can help you. The Friendship Dinner will be held on the Saturday night at 7:30 on the 12th floor of the Warwick Hotel. No suits or dresses, very informal----. The bar will be available before dinner. The buffet is great and includes a little bit of everything. It is $35, another bargain for the Warwick. Reservations must be made by March 20th. Email Rex Wilroy or Beth Grunden and a check made out to LSKC to Diane Caulk at 410 Llano in Pasadena, TX. 77504. Remember that the informality is worth $35 in itself! Judges have our permission to drop the tie and jacket! Vendors' booths are 10" X 10", tented, and come with a table and two chairs. The 8" table is skirted. If you need additional tables, they are $15 each or bring your own. The booths are $200.00. Email Beth for information or to sign up. Booths will be located in the koi area and in the line of traffic. Electricity and water is available at no extra cost but we must know in advance. Would appreciate any help before, after, or during the show. Experience not necessary. Email Beth or Rex. Thursday March 31 through Monday April 4 are the days. Questions: contact Beth Grunden or Rex Wilroy. |
